What is Pilates?

Postet on by Amanda Buck

What is Pilates?

Classical Pilates is an exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates over 100 years ago.  He was an exercise enthusiast and started developing the ideas of what we know as Pilates while working with injured WW1 soldiers.  Over many years he designed a methodical system of movements that he believed would develop our ability to control full-body exercises from the “Powerhouse” or what is now commonly known as the “core.”  In the early years, his method was known as Contrology.  The expectation was to, “always keep your mind wholly concentrated on the exercises as you perform them.” It wasn’t just about strength, endurance, or flexibility.  It was about your ability to control your movements which resulted in bodies with better strength, endurance and flexibility.

What is STOTT Pilates?

Pilates has evolved greatly from the original system created by Joseph Pilates as its popularity has grown and been adopted by different practitioners.  Many still practice and teach the original method and conversely you will find Pilates classes that emphasize the fitness aspect of Pilates with very little attention to “Contrology.”

Many of our physiotherapists at PhysioWorks are trained in STOTT Pilates.  STOTT PILATES is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method.  Developed with physical therapists, sports medicine and rehabilitation practitioners, it utilizes modern principles of exercise science and rehabilitation.  It was designed to be safely used with varying levels of physical abilities and injuries without sacrificing the fundamentals of Classical Pilates.  Therefore, it is well suited for our environment and clientele.

What can Pilates do for me?

  • Help restore pain free movements and function
  • Increase strength and endurance of your core
  • Promote an evenly conditioned body to perform balanced movements
  • Improve sports performance and of course prevent injuries
  • Train mindfulness of your movements
