Sports Specific Physiotherapy

How you run, golf, or swim – and how to get more out of it, for longer.

When a Sports Specific Assessment Can Help

Physiotherapist assessing a client’s lower back and hip alignment

Pain at the same point in every run, or a stride that feels different

A swing that leaves your back sore, or hips and shoulders struggling to keep up

A stroke that fades late in a set, or shoulders still stiff the next day

Wanting your body to hold up as you train harder or longer

We're set up for three sports: running, golf, and swimming. Our physiotherapists hold certifications in running gait analysis and golf movement screening, and for swimmers we screen on dry land the movements a stroke depends on. What comes back is specific — where the load is landing, how much turn, reach, or push-off you actually have, and where there's more available.

What to expect

01

Assessment

We ask what you're training for and where it's been sore, test your range and control, then see how they apply to your sport's own movements.

02

Treatment

Your physiotherapist goes through what the assessment turned up, then starts on the exercises and technique work it points to.

03

Performance

Exercises that fit the training you're already doing, and what to adjust in your sport, so there's more there when you ask for it.

Do I need to be an elite athlete to book a sports assessment?

Not at all. Our assessments suit movers of every level – weekend runners, casual golfers, masters swimmers, and competitive athletes alike. Many of our physiotherapists are runners, golfers, or swimmers themselves, so they know what you're training for.

What's included in a treadmill running video gait analysis?

Video capture from multiple angles while you run on the treadmill. Your physiotherapist looks at foot strike, cadence, joint alignment, and pelvic stability to find the mechanical patterns behind issues like shin splints, runner's knee, or Achilles pain.

What does a golf movement assessment focus on?

Mobility, rotational power, and core stability through functional screening — looking for things like tight hips, restricted thoracic rotation, or weak glutes that cost you power, consistency, or comfort in your swing.

What does the swim injury prevention screen involve?

A dry-land screen testing key movements, joint mobility, and movement control to find areas prone to overuse or strain. From there, your physiotherapist prescribes corrective exercises and a warm-up routine to do before you get in the water.

What should I wear and bring to my assessment?

Athletic wear that keeps your joints visible. For running, bring your current shoes (and orthotics if you use them). For golf, bring your 7-iron or driver. For swim screens, comfortable workout clothes are all you need.

Are sports-specific assessments covered by extended health insurance?

Yes, when the assessment is evaluating or managing an injury, pain, or physical limitation – these are billed under standard physiotherapy coverage with most major insurers. If it's booked purely for performance, without an underlying issue, coverage may not apply. Worth checking your plan first.

Other Treatments We Offer

A sports assessment often finds something worth treating on its own: a tight hip, a shoulder that needs loading, a block of strength work. There's someone for each of those at both clinics, so the next step is a booking rather than a search.
